Back in 1996, an earthquake of sorts hit the publishing industry. Author Helen Fielding was responsible for the tremors, when her “Bridget Jones’s Diary” hit the shelves. The clever little book has sold more than 2 million copies.

 It’s helped establish chick lit as a permanent publishing genre and has inspired thousands of imitations. While I’ve enjoyed many other chick lit masterpieces, some of which I’ve recommended in this column, only “Bridget Jones’s Diary” has earned a permanent space on my bookshelf. Don’t ask to borrow my copy, because I won’t let you.

 

Too Saved (2007) IMDB rating: 7.40 Plot: Lisa is a young, Christian woman. Bobby, her boyfriend, however, is a street hoodlum. Lisa prays constantly that Bobby will accept God in his life. Any help is much appreciated!?
Does anyone know of a couple banks that typically have low interest rates on their credit cards? I’m trying to find one to transfer my credit card onto another credit card with a lower interest rate so I am not wasting money on interest. I am with Wells Fargo right now and had a 13% interest rate on my card, but after losing my job and missing 3 or 4 payments over the past year and a half, my interest shot up to almost 27% and now I feel stuck! I only got a credit card to gain credit and I feel like I’m totally screwed. My card is current now but I’m afraid I will be paying this off forever so I would like to do a credit transfer in hopes of saving money in interest and paying it off more quickly. Being in debt is scary and I feel like this is my only answer. Besides, Wells Fargo has been running me around like crazy and lying to me to get their money. They have screwed me over and misinformed me one too many times and I can’t help but feel that it was intentional to get more money out of me. I fought with them but it falls on deaf ears. They just don’t care and seems to forget that they are a business and I am a paying customer. Any good advice or even your own experiences would be helpful.

Pearl Harbor (2001) IMDB rating: 5.30 Plot: The above summaries do a great job of describing the dynamics of the love triangle that develops between the two pilots that fall in love with the same nurse. The movie also does a credible job of displaying the war from the American side with FDR and our side. It also shows the strategy of Japan as they plan for and execute all facets of the attack on Pearl Harbor. While all details may not be historically correct, I believe that they do the job well - all things considered. Historic events that were altered were probably done so in an attempt to also make this movie the entertaining epic that it is.

What if the USSR or USA had not joined WW2?
When the Japanese bombed pearl harbor they brought the United States into the war, when Germany invaded the USSR the soviets joined but my question is what if one (or both) of these sides hasn’t joined? The way I see it if Germany doesn’t invade Russia but America joins the war:
The United States attempt to liberate Nazi territory (along with support from the allies), if they don’t succeed they deploy the bomb on German citizens to try to force them into submission and the allies eventually win.

If Germany invades USSR but America doesn’t get involved:
Germany with support from allies of Japan (who wouldn’t be fighting America) and Italy fight the USSR and the allies and the axis power eventually win a brutal war.

Lookout, The (2007) IMDB rating: 7.40 Plot: An admired high school hockey player (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) with a bright future foolishly takes a drive in the night with his girl friend and two other friends with his headlights off with devastating results. The former athlete is left with a brain injury that prevents him from remembering many things for extended periods of time. To compensate, he keeps notes in a small notebook to aid him in remembering what he is to do. He also lives with a blind friend (Jeff Daniels) who aids him. Obviously, with the mental incapacitation, he is unable to have meaningful work. Thus he works as a night cleaning man in a bank. It is there he comes under the scrutiny of a gang planning to rob the bank. The leader (Matthew Goode) befriends him and gets him involved with a young woman (Isla Fisher) who further reels him in. After they get close and after reeling him in with his own failures, the bank plan unfolds. Confused but wanting to escape his current existence, he initially goes along with the scheme. After realizing he is being used, he attempts to stop the robbery, which of course immediately goes awry. Why did she use up the extra fuel to drive me around to lookout point?
Her car was making a loud clunking noise from the front wheels while going round a corner and she asked me to go along for a ride in the car with her so that I could hear the noise. The first corner we went around there was the noise so we went right around the block twice to confirm the noise happens during turning left and turning right.

Then she said well lets go for a run out to the lookout point (we live by the sea and our town has a small lookout area which added about an extra 7mins to the whole trip)

I have known her for the last 3 and a half years She has always been very friendly and talkative towards me most girls are not. Every time I am around her she is very happy, giggly and funny as anything

I couldn’t figure out what was making the noise in her car and the funny thing is she has never been bothered by it since.

She like me has very little money, why did she use up extra fuel driving around to the lookout point?

I grew up in that era, and I don’t recall it having any sort of historical significance beyond bringing the Broadway hit to the screen. Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell already were established stars, so there is nothing significant there. It did not break any rules or establish any precedents.

I can’t think of a single thing that makes it significant. It was a box-office hit, but that would have been expected because of the cast and the popularity of the musical.

Now, someone who enjoys rewriting history might make some wild claim. However, I lived through that time period and can verify that there is NO historical significance for this particular movie.

Roxanne (1987) IMDB rating: 6.60 Plot: This is a remake of Cyrano de Bergerac, one of the most celebrated plays of the French theater, written by Edmond Rostand. Instead of being set in 17th century France, “Cyrano” has been changed to “Charlie”, a fire chief in a small town in Washington. Roxanne, played by the beautiful Darryl Hanna, rents a house for the summer to look at comets and Charlie quickly falls for her. Charlie is intelligent, funny, and sensitive, but all his fine qualities are unfortunately overshadowed by his very large nose (”Excuse me, it that your nose or did a bus park on your face?”). Charlie’s friend, Chris, on the other hand, is quite attractive, but superficial and awkward with words, especially around women (he has a tendency to throw up a lot). Both men are enthralled with Roxanne, but she, in a shallow but predictable move, shows interest in the handsome Chris. Chris is tongue-tied around her — everything that comes out of his mouth is either vulgar or indecipherable. So he asks Charlie for help.
